MIAMI METROZOO
No one could describe this site as a local attraction (it's located 45 minutes outside of downtown Miami) but that shouldn't stop you from visiting this exciting centre of animal activity. Isolated and rarely crowded, this completely cageless zoo is a fantastic spot to take the whole family. There's a wonderful petting zoo, play area and several daily programs designed to educate and entertain. There are even a few celebrities here (sort of). Both Mufassa and Simba of Lion King fame were modeled on a couple of Metrozoo lions. Other residents include two rare white Bengal tigers, a Komodo dragon, koala bears (rarely seen in the US), numerous kangaroos and even an African meerkat. Make sure to take advantage of the air-conditioned Zoofari Monorail tour offering visitors a nice overview of the park. A new Andean Condor exhibt was one of our favorites and keep your eye out for other great stuff. The zoo is always upgrading its faciliites, including it's amazing aviary. If there's a downside it's that the distance between animal habitats can be very long, so you're sure to be doing a lot of walking. But don't worry. There's benches and shaded gazebos strategically placed all over the zoo so you can rest when you need to.
